Source Of Trend
While leisurely doing a little bit of window shopping some years back in one of Italy’s celebrated shopping locations; I realized that pointed toe stilettos were ubiquitous.
Glancing down at my round toe Mary Janes I’d just purchased before leaving Australia. Suddenly feelings of being snubbed and smallflowed through me.Two weeks later, I had succumbed.

The trend had gotten the best of me, notwithstanding how peculiar I looked when the heels got caught in the uneven Italian pavement each time I strolled down the street(which was about every 3 steps ).

So what was it that changed my perception? I guess the root cause lies in the hands of, some authorities called ‘Vogue Analysts’ a.k.a. ‘The Fashion Mafia’. Their objective: to serve and protect the commercial interests of fashion moguls worldwide. How? By studying the consumers’ mentality and motivations to learn what is going to be the next profitable fad by way of in-depth traveling and marathon-like shopping expeditions,(damn lucky asses).

These ’style innovation analysts’ then report to consumer research firms, who then go on to compile their findings in industry mags and web sites for the use of fashion businesses. I’d like to claim that fashion corporations use research corporations because they are slackers, but I have to admit that it’s far from being the case.
They are just understandably vigilant about making a mistake. (Can you just imagine producing one thousand pairs of high-waist skinny-leg jeans to be hit on the face with the fact that consumers are demanding low- rise bootlegs? E-bay auctioning them isn’t a solution here).
There are also incredible time restrictions between the seasons. So most fashion designers, start designing their range around the time they get the latest market research or when they are fortunate enough to go around Europe and Japan themselves to buy materials and get inspired.
So what was the reasons that made me buy those pointy-toe stilettos I now consider my prized possession? I think its essence can be captured in oneconcept: uniformity.
Consensus by market trend researchers, by industry publications, designers, who control various retail outlets, and lastly by you (the consumer). Social pressure exerted by various groups in the industry creates our fashion reality.
And this is another reason why we are intrigued by some of those off-the-wall fashion anarchists. Many of us just want to steal their ideas and adjust them a bit, then turn them out a million times and sell the homogenized version back to the consumers. We have again entered into a new state of succumbing to social pressure.
Not necessarily negative, but in the harmony of social approval comes a dearth of creativity. I urge you to throw away your pleather Fendi purses! I encourage you to come up with your own trends! Damn, I am going to create my own version of the merkin ( if you do not know what merkin is, I counsel you to do a Bing Search on it because I will surely not take time to explain).
Funny world we are living in ain’t it? Now enough of this talk, “where the heck did I misplaced my knitting tools and my precious merkin ‘thread’ supply..?
