The Meaning of the Amethyst Stone
It is considered to be a “Power Stone” and is meant to aid with insomnia. If you find it difficult to sleep it is said that if you put the stone under your pillow it will bring about pleasant dreams and thus help you have a good nights rest. As well it can be rubbed across the forehead to remedy headaches.
These stones come in all shades of mauve, violet, lilac and purple and are also traditionally worn to instil a sober mind and guard against drunkenness or poison. It also eases compulsive/obsessive behaviour and the desire for tobacco, food, alcoholic drink and drugs.
It is beneficial for overworked and overstressed people in that it is meant to have an extremely calming mental effect.
The Ancient Egyptians used the amethyst to guard against guilty and frightening feelings. It was also worn as protection against witchcraft. It has also long been joined to spirituality and psychics making it one of the power stones. Occassionally it is also used to aid meditation when worn as a necklace.
Another name for the amethyst is the Bishop’s Stone and is worn by Catholic Bishops. It is a symbol of spiritual wisdom, piety, humility and sincerity. To this time the Catholic bishop still wears an amethyst ring on the second finger of his right hand. It’s also a symbol of The Age of Aquarius.
Frequently worn by healers this stone is said to have the power to focus energy. Healers usually put on several pieces of jewellery with amethysts inset in silver, especially an amethyst necklace. The person who is being cured will have an Amethyst to hold while the healing is being carried out. The healer then places another piece of Amethyst on the area of the torso in need of healing.
Often used for problems in the blood and for respiration difficulties. Crystal clusters are used to keep the air and life force in our homes fresh and positive.
Another belief is that a collection of Amethysts placed in a window that receives sun for most of the day can be very beneficial to use in healing and to heal negativity in the house. Or, position them in the moonlight and everyone in the home will feel calmer.
